  • Safai Mitra Samman, Swachhata Run, and River Cleanliness Drives inspire community participation in cleanliness efforts

South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL), a Chhattisgarh-based subsidiary of Coal India, successfully culminated its “Swachhata Hi Seva” campaign with Swachh Bharat Diwas celebrations on 2nd October 2024, coinciding with the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. The campaign, which ran from 14th September to 2nd October, spanned 8 districts in Chhattisgarh and 3 districts in Madhya Pradesh, effectively spreading Mahatma Gandhi’s message of cleanliness throughout the coal belt.
Key Highlights of the Campaign:

Extensive Cleanliness Drives at Riverbanks, Heritage, and Pilgrimage Sites:
In line with the vision of “Sampoorn Swachhata” (Complete Cleanliness), SECL organized multiple cleanliness drives targeting riverbanks, heritage, pilgrimage sites, and garbage dumping areas. These efforts, which saw enthusiastic participation from the local communities, led to the collection and proper disposal of over 90 metric tonnes of waste. The collective endeavor reflected a strong commitment to sustainable cleanliness.

Plantation Drive “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam:
Under the banner of “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam,” SECL also contributed to environmental sustainability by planting more than 4,000 saplings across its headquarters and operational areas, reinforcing the importance of green cover in preserving nature for future generations.

Safai Mitra Samman Samaroh & Health Camp:
Recognizing the invaluable contributions of Safai Mitras (cleanliness workers), SECL organized the Safai Mitra Samman Samaroh, honoring them with essential items such as boots, gloves, and T-shirts. In addition, free health camps were arranged, benefitting over 800 Safai Mitras, showcasing SECL’s focus on the well-being of its frontline workers who ensure cleanliness across communities.

Swachhata Run for Public Awareness:
On 1st October 2024, SECL organized the “Swachhata Happy Run” in Bilaspur city, with over 100 participants, including women and school children, spreading the message of cleanliness through their run. This was mirrored by similar events such as rallies and walkathons in SECL’s operational areas, creating widespread awareness about the importance of cleanliness.

Cleanliness Awareness Initiatives for School Children:
School children actively participated in various events aimed at fostering cleanliness awareness, including “Swachhata Ki Pathshala” (Cleanliness Classroom), formation of human chains, essay writing, quizzes, and painting competitions. These initiatives played a vital role in instilling the values of cleanliness in young minds, ensuring that the message of Swachhata continues to echo through future generations.

Swachhata Hi Seva Campaign – A Precursor to Special Campaign 4.0:
The “Swachhata Hi Seva” campaign marked the preliminary phase of the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances’ Special Campaign 4.0, aimed at promoting cleanliness within government offices and addressing pending cases and grievances. Under Special Campaign 4.0, SECL has set an ambitious target to dispose of over 2,200 metric tonnes of scrap and clear more than 30 lakh square feet of space within its facilities.
The next phase, focusing on implementation, will run from 2nd October to 31st October 2024, with SECL actively contributing to the overarching goals of waste reduction and operational efficiency, in line with the Swachh Bharat Mission.
