Raipur: With Shade-net method, Flowers can be cultivated throughout the year

Farmers are earning good income from flower cultivation
Grant released for flower farming with modern technology

Raipur, 11 April . With the use of Shade-net method, flowers can be cultivated throughout the year. Farmers of Chhattisgarh have adopted this method, and are earning a good income from flower farming regularly round the year. More and more farmers of Chhattisgarh are taking interest in practicing flower farmer by using modern techniques like shade net, poly house, drip and mulching. This had led to abundant production of flowers in the state. There is a huge demand of flowers in major cities such as Hyderabad, Amravati, Nagpur and Bhubaneswar and farmers of Chhattisgarh have become a major source of supply to these cities.


Shade net method is an effective method for flower cultivation, as it protects the crop from insects and disease, prolongs the cultivation, and hence, doubles the profit of the farmers. This method is useful for the crops which cannot be grown during the summer season. Under the National Horticulture Mission, 50 percent grant is provided for reserved cultivation. There is a provision of grant in 355 square meters at the rate of Rs 710 per square meter. Farmers can set up shade net in a maximum area of 4000 sqm.
Mr. Girish Dewangan, a progressive farmer of Kolihapuri village of Dongargarh development block in Rajnandgaon district, is cultivating rose, gerbera and tuberose etc, making a profit of about Rs 10 lakh annually. He told that there is a great demand for these flowers in the market for flower decoration. The flowers here are being sold locally as well as being supplied to cities like Hyderabad, Amravati, Nagpur, Bhubaneswar. He told that a wonderful variety of Shirdi rose has been planted in the fields. At the same time, varieties of Gerbera, Ankur, Sylvester, Doon, Danaelan, White House and Forbes have also been planted in the poly house.


Mr. Dewangan said that under the National Horticulture Mission, a grant of Rs. 16 lakh 88 thousand has been received for construction of poly house and Rs. 14 lakh for reserved cultivation. Moreover, he has also received a grant amount of Rs. 7 lakh 10 thousand for the shednet house, where he has planted marigold by drip and mulching method. He told that Rajnigandha flowers have also been planted using shade-net method.
