BALCO reaffirms its commitment towards the environment through its sustainable practices

  • Organises symbolic tree plantation drive to commemorate World Environment Day
  • Pledges to plant a total of 20,000 saplings in and around Korba, Kawardha & Chotia

Balconagar, Korba, June 05, 2021: Bharat Aluminium Company (BALCO), India’s iconic aluminium producer today commemorated ‘World Environment Day’ by organizing symbolic tree plantation drive at Parsabhata gate in the presence of Mr. R R Singh – Regional Officer, CECB Korba, Mr. Vijay Singh Porte – AE-CECB Korba and Mr. Manik Chandel – Scientist, CECB Korba, regional CECB officials & senior officials from BALCO. As part of this drive, BALCO pledged to plant a total of 2020 saplings in and around Korba region. The company conducted a host of activities including fixing of “artificial bird nests” for biodiversity conservation, photography contest on the theme of “ecosystem restoration”, online environmental quiz for the workforce, and felicitated the team for best energy, water and waste Management projects for the year 2020-21. The company followed all the essential norms of social distancing & safety during the event.

BALCO is focused on the concept of sustainable manufacturing by focusing on the economic, environmental, and social aspects of metal manufacturing activities. BALCO’s sustainability strategy is focused on evolving production processes to become more efficient with increased use of green and clean technologies. has always been aligned with its vision to achieve Zero Harm, Zero Waste and work for conserving the natural resources and protect the planet.

Over the years, BALCO has been proactively working for environmental protection and energy conservation; and in that direction, BALCO has taken up Energy Saving and Green House Gas(GHG) reduction as its topmost agenda and has been working dedicatedly towards it. BALCO through its innovative projects and initiatives has been able to reduce the GHG intensity today by 27% over the years. BALCO’s Specific energy consumption has been one of the lowest in the Aluminium Industries across the country. BALCO has also brought down its specific water consumption today by 170% from its previous specific water consumption levels, which is also one of the lowest amongst the peers. These figures are a testimony to BALCO’s spirited endeavours towards environment and energy conservation which contribute to a greener and better planet.

BALCO has recently been awarded numerous prestigious awards for its environmental conservation efforts. For the year 2020 BALCO has won the ‘Golden Peacock Sustainability Award’ and ‘CII HSE Excellence Award, Chhattisgarh’. BALCO has also achieved the ‘CII Energy Excellence Award’, ‘Sustainable business of the year Award’ and ‘Energy & Environment Global Environment Award’ in recent years.

In its commitment towards sustainable practices, BALCO controls ambient air quality using top-of-the-line technologies like Fume Treatment Plant (FTP). Fly ash disposal from its power plant to the ash dykes are disposed of through advanced High Concentration Slurry Disposal (HCSD) systems. The same fly ash is then utilized 100% to make bricks and for road construction. The company has set up a scientific Solid & Liquid Resource Management (SLRM) centre in its township to convert organic waste into compost. As part of its commitment to increase green cover in and around the plant site, BALCO has planted more than 5.5 lakh trees. The organization has also been successful in recycling 100% water in its smelter operations.
