State-Level Kushti Academy to be established in Raipur: Fostering traditional wrestlers’ potential
Chief Minister Shri Bhupesh Baghel made two important announcements on Nag Panchmi
Raipur 22 August 2023// In a significant move aimed at preserving and promoting ‘Akhadas’ (traditional Indian wrestling training centers), the state government is introducing “Bajrangbali Akhada Protsahan Yojana” along with the establishment of a State-Level Kushti Academy in Raipur. These transformative announcements were made by Chief Minister Shri Bhupesh Baghel on the occasion of the Nag Panchami festival, symbolizing the state’s commitment to promoting ‘Kushti’–the traditional Indian wrestling.
Prior to this, Chief Minister Shri Bhupesh Baghel had already announced the establishment of an academy to promote traditional sports like Mallakhamb in the state.
The motive behind the Bajrangbali Akhada Protsahan Yojana is to create a favourable environment for traditional sports like Kushti in Chhattisgarh. Simultaneously, the aim is to promote the traditional Indian wrestling talents of our state to national and international platforms.
The scheme goes beyond just financial support – it includes the rejuvenation and advancement of Akhadas, once vibrant hubs where ‘Pehalwans’ (traditional wrestlers) showcased their skills. Many of these Akhadas have now turned into abandoned places. This scheme aims to breathe life back into these centers of training, resounding once again with the rhythmic sounds of Pehalwans honing their skills. This will not only offer a platform for wrestlers to display their skills but also serve as a training ground for talented Pehalwans from both the state and the country.
In addition, a state-level wrestling academy will also be established in the capital city of Raipur. This academy aims to enhance the talents of Pehalwans. In both India and Chhattisgarh, there exists a rich heritage of Kushti that extends beyond tradition. Techniques such as Dhobi Pachhad, Dhak, and Jholi have emerged from these Akhadas. This demonstrates the deep-rooted connection of Kushti within our tradition. These significant announcements have been made by the Chief Minister to revive this valued heritage.
What makes these announcements noteworthy is that they coincide with the occasion of Nag Panchami, a festival associated with the ‘Dangals’ of Kushti. During this festival, people enthusiastically gather at Akhadas to witness the traditional wrestling bouts. With the introduction of the ‘Bajrangbali Akhada Protsahan Yojana’, one can expect that in the upcoming Nag Panchami celebrations, numerous Akhadas will once again be filled with Pehalwans and spectators. This initiative is likely to enhance the Nag Panchami celebrations in Chhattisgarh by adding more fervour and enthusiasm.
