Jashpur rural women promote hygiene and prosperity with sanitary pad initiative

Raipur 20 September 2023// Chhattisgarh Government is making consistent efforts to empower women economically by involving them in various economic activities being conducted in the state-run Gauthans. As part of this initiative, women in the village of Kumekela in Jashpur district are actively participating in the production of sanitary pads under the NRLM Bihan scheme. This initiative has proven to be a significant source of income for the group. Furthermore, the women involved in this initiative are also taking on the responsibility of educating women in neighbouring villages about the importance of using sanitary pads for personal hygiene.

In the Pathalgaon Development Block of Jashpur district, the women of the Maa Durga Women’s Self-Help Group have started the production of sanitary pads after undergoing training. In this particular panchayat, a total of 26 self-help groups have been established so far. All members of the Maa Durga Self-Help Group hold weekly meetings, contribute to savings, and have received a revolving fund amount of Rs 15,000 as part of the Bihan scheme. These women also get bank loans to facilitate the production, distribution and sales of sanitary pads, contributing significantly to raising awareness among village women regarding the importance of using sanitary pads. As a result, the women of the group have generated an income of Rs 20,000 from their sanitary pad venture.
