Ban on single-use plastics boost employment opportunities for rural women groups associated with Gauthans
Raipur, June 24, 2023/ Plastic poses a significant threat to the environment, causing pollution and harm to humans and animals. To combat this issue, a ban on single-use plastics has been implemented. Consequently, rural women associated with Gauthans have got new employment opportunities by manufacturing eco-friendly bags for vermicompost packaging, which serve as an environmentally friendly alternative to single-use plastics while also generating income.
Under the Mahatma Gandhi Rural Industrial Park (RIPA), an initiative is being launched to produce standardized vermicompost packaging bags in the state. Machinery is being installed to assist women’s groups in manufacturing these bags. These women associated with Gauthans are actively engaged in manufacturing alternative products such as vermicompost bags, cloth bags, paper envelopes, and other items to reduce the use of non-standard plastics. Women’s groups are also making efforts to contribute their bit in effectively banning non-standard plastics by providing affordable alternative materials. Following this initiative, rural women from Birkoni Gauthan in the Mahasamund district are manufacturing eco-friendly bags called ‘Sirpur Vermicompost Bags’.
These vermicompost bags and other packaging materials produced by the Ram Janki Self-Help Group are being made available in Gauthans and C-marts based on demand. Smt. Rekha Nagpure, the president of the Ram Janki Self-Help Group, stated that they have already supplied 5,000 vermicompost bags to Gauthans across the district and continue to receive orders. She mentioned that these bags are in high demand due to their standard size, lightweight, and durability.
