The mine has brought laurels to SECL at the national level by securing the second position in the country. The award has been given to underground mines with difficult mining conditions.

Recently, the list of winners and runners-up of various categories of National Safety Awards (Mines) – 2021 has been released by the Directorate General of Mines Safety (Ministry of Labour and Employment). The National Safety Awards (Mines) were instituted in 1983 by the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India, in recognition of the efforts made under the Mines Act 1952 to improve safety in mines. This prestigious award is given every year in two categories for coal, metal and oil mines for steps taken for safety of mining workers.

Speaking on the occasion, SECL CMD Dr. Prem Sagar Mishra said, “At SECL, our guiding principle has been ‘Safety to Prosperity’ i.e. Prosperity is not possible without safety. I congratulate our officers and workers of Chirimiri area for making the efforts of safe mining successful.”

The NCPH colliery mine, commissioned in the year 1942, is spread over an area of 1010 hectares and has an environmental clearance of 1.20 million tonnes per annum. High quality G-8 grade coal is extracted from the mine. As of January 2023, there is a reserve of 3.8 million tonnes of coal. About 630 workers work in the mine to extract coal.

It may be noted that with the help of environment-friendly state-of-the-art mining technology, SECL has made several efforts regarding mine safety. With the help of surface miner and vertical ripper, coal mining and OB cutting has become possible without blasting. On the other hand, with the help of high-capacity mobile water sprinklers, the effect of dust flying in the mining area is reduced. Man riding system in underground mines has helped in ease of mining and movement.

Along with this, Risk Assessment based Safety Management Plan has been implemented in all the mines of SECL. Steps like explanation of safety related guidelines in Hindi and local language, frequent mine inspection by workmen inspector, safety oath before starting of shift, inter area safety audit of all mines of SECL etc. have also been taken.
