Innovation of Durg’s Kurmigundra Gauthan
Locally started center to provide high breed goats to goat herders to promote goat rearing
This center will work as a sub-centre of Kamdhenu University
This innovation will save the cost of transportation, as the farmers will no longer have to bring goats from other states
Raipur, 21 February .
Chief Minister Mr. Bhupesh Baghel had directed the officials to take special initiative for cattle breeding in order to promote animal husbandry and farming. In the same sequence, officials underlined the need to make high breed cattle locally available to the cattle herders. Durg District Administration has worked effectively in this direction. Earlier, a large number of hatchery units were established to provide chickens to the farmers for poultry farming and now a breeding center for Osmanabadi goats has been established locally to provide high breed goats. This breeding center will work as a sub-centre of Kamdhenu University. Today, the first batch of 25 female goats and 2 male goats was provided to the breeding center. Vice-Chancellor Dr. NP Dakshinkar handed over this batch of goats to Deputy Director Livestock Development Department Dr. Rajeev Deoras in front of Osmanabadi Goat Seed Center of Kamdhenu University today.
This innovative step in the direction of promoting high-breed animal husbandry has been taken on the instructions of Durg District Collector Mr. Pushpendra Kumar Meena, asper the vision of Chief Minister Mr. Bhupesh Baghel. Osmanabadi goats easily adapt to the environment of Durg district. But due to the declining interest of the farmers towards goat rearing, high breed goats like these were not locally available in the state, and therefore had to be ordered from other states. Because of which, farmers had to incurr the high cost of transportation. But now, with the establishment of this goat breeding centre, high breed goats will be available to the cattle rearers in the Gauthan itself.
Twining rate is up to 47 percent
Giving information in this regard, Vice-Chancellor Dr. Dakshinkar said that the twining rate of goats of Osmanabadi species, that is, the ability to give birth to twins, is up to 47 percent. Dr. Dakshinkar told that the climate of Durg is also favorable for this specie. They have good disease resistance and if provided proper care, they undergo faster growth. It is worth mentioning that according to a report by NCBI (National Center for Biotechnology Information), generally goats have the 61.96 per cent possibility of giving birth to one offspring, 37.03 percent possibility of giving birth to twins and the rate of giving birth to three kids is 1.01 percent in goats. In this context, Osmanabadi goats prove to be more useful and profitable for the goat farmers in terms of qualitative growth.
Black Bengal is suitable for Surguja and Osmanabadi is suitable for Durg
Experts on the subject are of the opinion that diferent species of goats adapt to the different areas of Chhattisgarh. For example, if we talk about Surguja, then Black Bengal is quite suitable for this region, while Osmanabadi adapt well to the environment of Durg district.
Two factors that give this initiative a great potential
It was found in a nationwide survey that the number of goats has increased by 25 per cent. The significant growth in the income of the goat rearers has encouraged more and more people to adopt animal husbandary. Many are adopting this practice as a large scale enterprise. In Kurmigundra, Gauthan committee will operate the goat breeding center. This innovation may lead to a significant increase in the income of the gauthan, besides improving breed of the local goats.
