Awareness will be raised for the control of Iodine Deficiency Disorder
Global Iodine Deficiency Disorder Prevention Day on 21 October
Raipur October 20 . “Global Iodine Deficiency Disorder Control week” will be celebrated by the Health Department from 21 October to 27 October. During this week long program , various awareness campaigns will be organized in all the health institutions of the state and numerous activities will also be conducted to raise awareness among the general public regarding the prevention of iodine deficiency disorders. The campaign will also provide information about the usefulness of iodized salt and the importance of iodine consumption in all age groups. People will be encouraged to use iodised salt in all health institutions including the district headquarters.
State Nodal Officer, of Iodine Deficiency Disorder Control Program of the Health Department, Dr. Kamlesh Jain said that constant efforts are being made to bring public awareness regarding Iodine Deficiency Disorder and the use of iodised salt. He further said that Iodine deficiency is most prevalent in pregnant women and infants. Iodine deficiency in pregnant women increases the risk of miscarriage, low weight at the time of birth, stillbirth or death of the baby after birth. On the other hand, iodine deficiency in a child can cause intellectual and physical development issues such as stunted brain development, stunted growth, dwarfism, late puberty, hearing and speech problems or lack of understanding. Dr. Jain also informed that deficiency of iodine can cause many diseases as Iodine is one of the essential nutrients for everyone in general and especially for pregnant women and babies. Global Iodine Deficiency Disorder Prevention Day is celebrated every year on 21 October to make people aware about the diseases caused by the deficiency of iodine in the body and to take necessary precautions to prevent iodine deficiency.
