KORBA, Feb 28 Members of Gondawana Gantantra Party blocked national highway near Gurasiya and torched several vehicles to stage protest against damage to the statue of the party’s founder Heera Singh Markam. The party members had given a memorandum in the past, demanding arrest of the culprits. District police has arrested two in this context but the party members continued with the protest, stating that the chief culprit is still roaming free.

The statue of Heera Singh Markam, at Gurasiya square under Bango station limits, was damaged earlier in this month and police has arrested two men in this context. Both of them are currently in judicial custody and their bail applications have been rejected. However, the members of Gondwana Gantantra Party stated that the chief culprit is being saved and is still roaming free. Demanding his arrest, they blocked the national highway near Gurasiya and torched several vehicles. 


As per the information, a new statue of Markam has been prepared and was scheduled to be erected on Monday. District police remained vigilant to avoid any unpleasant conditions on the occasion. SDOP Ishwar Trivedi, SHO Anil Patel, Naveen Dewangan and others reached the spot. Till the news was filed, the statue had not been erected and party members were engaged in protest, while police tried to control the situation.
