Korba, December 16, 2025: South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL) has taken a significant step to curb diesel theft and operational irregularities by implementing an advanced digital surveillance and security system across all its operational areas. The initiative aims to establish complete control over diesel pilferage and ensure transparency and efficiency in operations.
As part of the strengthened security framework, all vehicles of SECL’s Quick Response Teams have been equipped with state-of-the-art Global Positioning System (GPS) tracking systems. These vehicles are being monitored in real time from the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) located at SECL Headquarters. This enables swift response to any suspicious activity or emergency situation, thereby further reinforcing the security mechanism.
In addition, all Heavy Earth Moving Machinery (HEMM) deployed at SECL mines have been fitted with advanced digital sensors. These sensors provide precise data on machine location, operating hours, diesel consumption and any abnormal activity. The system has proved highly effective in the early detection of diesel theft and ensures complete transparency in machinery utilisation.
To further tighten access control, SECL is installing Radio Frequency Identification (RFID)-based boom barriers at all its mining areas. Only authorised vehicles fitted with RFID tags will be permitted entry into the mine premises. The system automatically records vehicle entry and exit data, effectively preventing unauthorised movement within the mining zones.
Moreover, selected contractual vehicles and Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs) have also been equipped with GPS tracking systems. Real-time data related to vehicle movement, location, halt duration and route mapping is being integrated with Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) footage at the ICCC and analysed through Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based analytics. The system automatically identifies abnormal movement, unauthorised stoppages, route deviations and suspicious patterns, significantly reducing the scope for diesel theft and misreporting.
Through the integrated use of GPS tracking, digital sensors, RFID access control and Artificial Intelligence-based monitoring, SECL aims to eliminate diesel theft at its roots and establish a secure, transparent and efficient operational ecosystem. These initiatives are expected to bring substantial improvements in security, operational efficiency and monitoring.
SECL management has reiterated its zero-tolerance policy towards diesel theft and any form of operational irregularity. Strict and prompt action will be taken against those found guilty, irrespective of their position or level.
