Jal Jeevan Mission has relieved the people of Bhuigaon from water woes; livelihoods have also improved
Raipur, 19 July 2024। The Jal Jeevan Mission, a government scheme aimed at delivering clean drinking water to rural families, is tackling water scarcity in various villages. Apart from providing safe drinking water, it is also promoting water conservation among rural communities. Following Chief Minister Shri Vishnu Deo Sai’s instructions, the Jal Jeevan Mission is swiftly rolling out across Chhattisgarh. A case in point is Bhuigaon village in the Charama block of Uttar Bastar Kanker district, which is 30 kilometres away from the district headquarters. Since the implementation of the Jal Jeevan Mission, the villagers have been relieved of their water woes. Previously, especially women and children had to endure long daily trips for water, a time-consuming task. Due to water scarcity, many had to resort to borewells, depleting the village’s groundwater level.
To tackle this issue, the Public Health Engineering Division of Kanker formulated a plan under the Jal Jeevan Mission. Beginning with an assessment of the water scarcity in Bhuigaon village, efforts were made to provide tap water connections to each household. A water tank was set up, and pipelines were laid to transport water from a nearby source to the village. Stringent quality checks were carried out to ensure the safety of the water supply. The Executive Engineer of the Public Health Engineering Department shared that villagers were trained and equipped with water testing kits for monitoring of water quality.
The state government has conducted various awareness campaigns to educate the residents about the significance and advantages of the Jal Jeevan Mission. The state government has also organised training sessions and workshops on water management, conservation, and sanitation. This initiative not only brought water accessibility to the village but also instilled a sense of optimism among the community. Livelihoods have improved, leading to increased self-reliance among the villagers. Through the concerted efforts of the Public Health Engineering Department and a non-governmental organisation, significant progress has been made in raising awareness among the people. Now, residents of Bhuigaon village acknowledge that the Jal Jeevan Mission has transformed their lives.
