Traditional Dheki-pounded rice surges in popularity for its nutritional value in urban areas

Balachhapar RIPA creates employment opportunities for women through Dheki Rice Production

Raipur 01 July 2023// Traditional dheki-pounded rice is gaining popularity in urban areas due to its nutritional value. It contains more than 40 per cent iron, over 50 per cent fiber, and abundant vitamins. On the initiative of Jashpur District Administration, this 100 per cent Dheki/wood processed rice is being produced in the Mahatma Gandhi Rural Industrial Park of Balachhapar, which has also created employment opportunities for local women’s groups.

Chief Minister Shri Bhupesh Baghel consistently emphasizes the preservation of scientific knowledge embedded in our traditions. Many people who prioritize their health are attracted to our culinary traditions, and one such tradition is the consumption of Dheki pounded rice. The process of polishing rice leads to a significant loss of its vitamins, whereas this rice retains its nutritional value. Currently, the production is being carried out in Balachhapar RIPA and efforts are being made to expand its market through attractive packaging and branding.

Among the various varieties of Dheki pounded rice, there is high demand for Javaphool cold processed rice produced in RIPA. Jashpur district is known for its highest production of Javaphool rice, and its popularity is increasing in other states due to its aromatic qualities. Shri Samarth Jain, an expert from Vedic Vatika, has mentioned that 13 women in Balachhapar are being trained in Dheki rice production and attractive packaging techniques. The sale of this hand cleaned rice is taking place through supermarkets.

Dheki processed rice is highly regarded for its nutritional value. It retains the outer husk of the rice, which is rich in Vitamin E. Plans are being chalked out to supply this rice to other states as well with appropriate packaging, capitalizing on its natural purity.
