Korba, 21st April 2025: On World Earth Day, Bharat Aluminium Company Limited (BALCO), India’s iconic aluminium producer and a part of Vedanta Aluminium, introduced six Electric Vehicles (EVs) in its waste management fleet for its integrated township in Korba. With a load capacity of 1,000 kgs, each vehicle facilitates efficient and segregated waste collection enabling systematic waste disposal.
Adding to its suite of green technologies, BALCO has also deployed electric lithium-ion forklifts in its operations. These forklifts have improved efficiency while significantly reducing carbon emissions and fuel consumptions, aligning with the company’s vision of decarbonizing 100% of its Light Motor Vehicle (LMV) fleet by 2030. Additionally, for mobility inside the plant, BALCO is steadily transitioning core processes towards low-emission alternatives.
BALCO also encourages its employees to use EVs, supporting the purchase of electric vehicles at subsidized rates. Sensitizing people with its green energy practices, workshops, and plantation drives BALCO is steadily working towards building greener communities.
Mr. Rajesh Kumar, CEO & Director BALCO says, “At BALCO we are actively investing in innovative green solutions that not just transform our operations but inspire a movement towards sustainability. By enabling cleaner technologies and encouraging people to adopt sustainable practices, we are building a greener future for the communities to thrive in.”
Furthering its resolve towards efficient waste management, the company has implemented the Solid and Liquid Resource Management (SRLM) model, which emphasizes on the segregation of waste at the source. The system ensures separate collection of bio-degradable, non-biodegradable and sanitary waste utilizing color-coded bins to streamline the disposal process. Focusing on the cleanliness and sustainability, BALCO is building a greener and heathier township for all. With developments like the Nehru Garden showcasing the native flora, Balconagar is a hub for green recreational spaces.
BALCO’s efforts in sustainability have been acknowledged across multiple national forums such as the ‘Future Ready Factory of the Year’ award by IMEA, and a National Energy Leader award by CII at the Energy Excellence Summit. BALCO is continuously working towards embedding sustainable practices in every layer of its operations.
