Korba, January 5, 2026. The IRSM WR-II Cricket Tournament 2025–26 was inaugurated with great enthusiasm and cultural splendour at Mansarovar Stadium, NTPC Korba. The tournament, scheduled from January 4 to January 8, 2026, features six teams—Korba, Sipat, Lara, Gadarwara, Khargone, and Raipur—and promises an exciting celebration of sportsmanship, teamwork, and competitive spirit.
The inaugural ceremony was led by Shri Bibhas Ghatak, Business Unit Head, NTPC Korba, in the esteemed presence of Shri Satrughana Behera, General Manager (O&M). Smt. Subhra Ghatak, President, Maitri Mahila Samiti, graced the occasion as the Special Guest of Honour.
The dignitaries were accorded a traditional welcome, escorted by vibrant Karma dancers and schoolchildren. They were felicitated with eco-friendly planters, IRSM badges, and Angvastrams, reflecting NTPC’s commitment to sustainability and cultural heritage.
All participating teams were honoured with the Kosa Angvastra, symbolising respect for sportsmanship and regional tradition. A key highlight of the event was the unveiling of the tournament logo, mascot “Nandi,” and the Winner’s Trophy by ED Korba. The mascot Nandi, inspired by the Indian Bull (Gaur)—Chhattisgarh’s state animal—represents strength, resilience, and endurance, while also highlighting wildlife conservation.

Addressing the gathering, Shri Bibhas Ghatak stated,
“Sports play a vital role in building discipline, teamwork, and leadership. Through this tournament, we aim to promote fitness, fair play, and unity among employees across NTPC.”
The ceremony included a march-past by all teams, followed by a torch-lighting ceremony by the team captains. A Fair Play Pledge and Fitness Pledge were administered, and the event was formally launched with a symbolic balloon release.
Before the commencement of the first match, archery and Kalaripayattu performances enthralled the audience, showcasing precision, agility, and the true spirit of sportsmanship, while energising players and spectators alike.
The ceremonial first kick-off was performed by the BUH Korba and GM (O&M). The opening match between Korba and Sipat witnessed an exciting contest, with Team Korba emerging victorious.
The event saw enthusiastic participation from senior officials, Maitri Mahila Samiti members, Sports Council representatives, union and association members, welfare bodies, departmental heads, and NTPC employees.
The IRSM WR-II Cricket Tournament 2025–26 is set to be a vibrant festival of cricket, camaraderie, and sporting excellence.
